How To: De-stress

As cliche as it sounds, life is a roller-coaster. You're going to have your ups and downs. Sometimes things go wrong and you'll have a bad day, and this is when stress starts to pile up. This is where you'll be tested most. How you deal with stress is a true test of someone's character. Some unhealthy coping mechanisms can include; smoking, drinking, and over eating. So what do you do when you aren't feeling too well? When you're too stressed to function properly and you get frustrated? First things first, find what gets you stressed and avoid it like the plague. If you're trying to lose weight, stop looking at the scale everyday. The number today doesn't matter if you end up reaching your goal. The constant reminder that you didn't drop 5 pounds today will cause unnecessary stress.

Don't stress about eating with friends just go out and do it. Watch what you eat and if you eat too much keep track so you don't lose control.

Same goes with anything else that stresses you out. If you know that doing work last minute is stressful, plan ahead of time and finish it early. If you know seeing certain people grinds your gears, do whatever you can to stay away and block them out. But stress can't always be avoided. Personally, I rarely find myself stressing out about anything. To help, I keep this in mind; it's not the end of the world. Let me tell you a story. I was 19 years old, still a kid and only had my license for about 2 years. Admittedly, I was a very aggressive driver at the time and often found myself just feet away from the car in front of me. One day, I was tired from driving too long and my reaction time wasn't the greatest. Yet I still followed only feet behind. The car in front of me came to a screeching stop and I was unable to react. Rear-ending him, and nearly totaling both cars.

This was my car after the accident, as you can see it was banged up. I was still alive and luckily for me no one was hurt.

This was my first accident and luckily no one was hurt, but I had no idea what was going to happen to me. Was my insurance going to go up? Would I be able to pay for it? Would I get charged for reckless driving, etc. All these thoughts spinning in my head at once, I had to calm myself down somehow.

Spend time with friends and take a day to yourself, those are the days you'll remember.

I reminded myself that life wasn't over. I would get through this. And as much as it would suck to deal with the consequences, I was still alive. Something else you can do to de-stress is go out with friends and enjoy some free time. The worst thing you can do is focus on the problem until it kills you. Take a break, go for a walk, see your friends talent shows, get away from the problem.
